Tinnitius

Tinnitus is defined as the perception of sound in the ears or in the head when no external sound source is present.

Tinnitus is most often subjective, meaning only the person having tinnitus can hear it. People describe their tinnitus in many ways. Common descriptions include: buzzing, ringing, roaring, hissing, screeching, or static. In the United States approximately 40 to 50 million people experience tinnitus.

There can be many causes for tinnitus. Patients experiencing tinnitus should initially consult with their Primary Care Physician (PCP). A professional evaluation by an audiologist will likely follow the PCP’s examination. An audiologist with expertise in tinnitus will be able to perform comprehensive testing to pinpoint the possible cause of the tinnitus and quantify the loudness and frequency of the tinnitus. With the evaluation completed, Tinnitus Treatment options can then be customized for the patient’s needs.
